Parish History

Acknowledgments

None of us has lived the whole of this parish history, but each one of us has helped create it. Many thanks go out to all parishioners, friends, family members, publishers and those who, in any way, helped this book come to fruition. The following people had a direct hand in compiling this Journal and deserve special thanks:

The Historical Writers Centennial Committee who met regularly, Annie Kyrkostas, coordinator, Mary Jo Rule, Carol Griffin, Charlotte Baecher and Deirdre Hayes.

Marge Bevad, co-chairperson of the Centennial Committee, who, from the very beginning, has been the bedrock upon which all our efforts have been based. She has been there with unshakable optimism, serene confidence and positive encouragement.

Annie Kyrkostas, coordinator of the centennial writers committee, who has with infinite patience spent hours at the computer and with boundless fortitude kept the whole endeavor manageable.

Carol Griffin who, as journalistic writer and photographer, has provided a pictorial commentary on today’s unfolding story of parish life. Her earnest research work has been a major contribution to a parochial memoir which will be treasured by generations to come.

Mary Jo Rule, whose classical, poetic and educational foundation has been an essential resource to this literary undertaking.

Julie Byrne, co-chairperson of the Centennial Committee, whose creative work with the biographical bulletin inserts and generosity of time and perspective was invaluable.

Frances Gencarelli, parish secretary since the early sixties, who has been our unofficial historian in residence. Her authoritative resourcefulness in helping to keep the chronology in order has been priceless.

Bill Barlow, former editor of the Parishioner, for his meticulous historical work and recordkeeping, leaving us an invaluable resource from which to draw.

Regular Parishioner photographers, Betty Madden, Katherine Spencer, Ken Spencer and Carol Griffin.

Frank O. Braynard, for the line drawing that graces the cover of the Journal.

June Roberts, for her beautiful sketch of the old church.

The St. Boniface Parish archives.

The Long Island Catholic, for historical photos.

John J. O’Connell, photographer for special events.

Even though much time and research was devoted to the preparation of this book, it is subject to human error. If we have failed to acknowledge the contribution of anyone, we express our sincere regrets.

Our Parish History

Over a hundred years ago many faithful people gathered to lay the foundation for the worship of God here in Sea Cliff.   During our centennial celebrations in 1998, we published a Journal to help us remember their sacrifices and their faith.

A Centennial, however, is more than a remembering of the past. It is an appreciation of how the present has been built upon the rich traditions of the past. We ourselves must lay a foundation for the future so that the next generation may gather to give thanks to God for His many gifts.

As a parish we come from many places and many experiences. The Journal, therefore, documents various stages in the development of the parish, the church, the school and religious education. The Journal also documents many aspects of our present structure.

The Journal does not document the future. Just as the past led to what we are today, it is in the present that we can set the foundation of the future. Hopefully, we will continue to be led and guided by the same Spirit of God. May He bless all the members of the parish today. We thank all those faith filled people, of yesterday and today, who have gifted us with this treasure.

May we look forward with faith to the future generations that will continue to make St. Boniface unique.
